For more than 30 years, Link Up—a program of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute—has paired orchestras with students in grades 3–5 at schools in their local communities to explore orchestral repertoire and fundamental musical skills, including creative work and composition, through a hands-on music curriculum. Students participating in Link Up attend a culminating concert where they sing with the orchestra from their seats. Composers and musicians create melodies, which can be sung or played on instruments. When an orchestra plays these melodies, the orchestra sings. Students explore melody in a range of colorful orchestral repertoire, sing, compose, and perform in a culminating concert.

Our sensory-friendly concerts feature performances by our String or Wind Ensembles in a space that allows for movement, interaction, or easy listening.  Attendees are invited to sit close to the performers, but quiet rooms are provided for attendees who need a break from the stimulation. All performances and activities are free for children and adults, but RSVP is appreciated.  Scarves, props, and other manipulatives will be on hand, but please bring any you prefer to use.

For Middle and High School students, CSO String Quintet and Wind Quintet visits serve to further engage students in their musical study. Whether it's a performance which covers the instruments and well-known composers for a general music class or a visit to a band or orchestra ensemble to cover rehearsal techniques, practice habits, and working as an ensemble, the quintets enhance student learning and musicianship.
